One day after the senseless violence that took the lives of at least twelve people hurt as many as fifty more, I wonder what motivates America's love affair with guns and violence. Pollsters report something like forty-five percent of Americans own at least one gun, another poll suggests it is much higher, more like 85%. Clearly the Second Amendment wasn't written to defend the right of anyone to amass an arsenal of automatic weapons with which to terrorize their neighbors and countrymen.
We no longer need a ready militia of civilians, we have police departments and a well-armed standing Navy, Army, National Guard and Marine Corps. What excuse do we have for arming civilians with assault rifles at this point in history?
